My Philosopy On Education or Like Moths to Hamlet

I recently spent a few days spreading applications to school districts in hopes that some unsuspecting Principal might unwittingly make me Mr. Bates again and uncage me with the minds of his students.

What is your philosophy on education?
(CVSD Certified Personnel Application, p. 2)

My answer:

To me education is using the subject matter to build a fire so bright and warm and inviting that students and their friends and their parents gather round because they can’t resist the fire’s draw. And once they’re in close and mesmerized and comfortable they’ll pick up sticks and start poking at the flames and writing their names with smoking embers and melting everything not bolted down. And then they’ll take their burning sticks and wander off into the darkness to explore, and then they’ll wander back because they love the illumination of the fire and the camaraderie of their mates. Eventually, they’ll break out food and start to sing and play music and tell jokes and burn their shoes and stay up all night talking about love and death and Hamlet.

PROMETHEUS THE MUSICAL Alive Again - Opens Sept. 12, 2008

In January 2006 we staged our first concert version of Prometheus. The 16 song concert was from our perspective a wonderful success. We played to a full house of 600 seats both nights and were honored with standing ovations from our audiences after each performance.

That show was an amazing milestone in the production of the play. At last Prometheus's heart was beating. In the grand scheme of things, he just sort of woke up stretched, yawned and then went back to sleep, but after ten years of Fankenstinian work, the monster was alive and the crowds loved him.

I must admit that the experience of those two shows, where every word and emphatic utterance were my creations, was one of the most amazingly rewarding experiences of my life. And signing autographs after a show rocks.

The following are a series of emails I sent to a few close friends leading up to that show.

The good news is that this posting is the beginning of a new series of postings that will follow.

Today is April 21st, 2008. I'm on my second trip to Portland meeting with Michael Harrison and Greg Tamblin getting the script and show ready for our 6 week run at the Lakewood Center for the Arts in Lake Oswego. Opening night is September 12th.

Last night Greg handed me a copy of the Play Bill for the Lakewood Theater Company's 2008-2009 season and at last in print there we are:
